Here for Now
September 2nd, 2016 – October 16th, 2016
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 8th, 2016: 5 - 9 p.m.
Abigail Ogilvy Gallery is proud to present Here for Now, a group show featuring John Tabor Jacobson, Nicole Patel, and Wendy Shapiro. Here for Now is an exploration of the way materials can be repurposed and recreated, and the existence of art in the moment between formation and disassembly. Each artist plays with the concept of medium, using sustainable and salvaged materials which challenge the traditional methods of creating art.
Featuring:
JOHN TABOR JACOBSON is a Providence-based artist on the forefront of an inventive new medium. His practice begins with peeling years of accumulated graffiti paint straight off the walls and repurposing them. His completed work takes these salvaged pieces and rearranges them into new compositions, detailed with layers of color chipping and peeling into each other. Each piece is an abstract conglomeration of color, texture, and history–an homage to street art in a fine art context. John Tabor Jacobson received his B.A. form Rhode Island School of Design and has since participated in several artist residencies, including Penland and the Anderson Art Center Ranch. He has shown in galleries throughout the northeast, including The Candita Clayton Gallery in Pawtucket, RI and The Avenue Concept in Providence, RI.
NICOLE PATEL is a New York-based artist whose work is at once minimal and nuanced. Her geometric grids explore elements of drawing and design through textile. Patel works with only organic, sustainable medium. She sees the full potential of raw materials, without the irreversible alterations of cutting, coloring, and marking. Made from one or two threads wound across a blank surface, her pieces can all be disassembled and reassembled limitlessly. Nicole Patel received her B.A. at Syracuse University, and has since studied at art and design schools in Paris, London, and Barcelona. She has been included in exhibitions and art fairs internationally, with an upcoming show at the Glasgow International Art Festival in Scotland. She has also been commissioned for site specific installations, and covered in a number of design publications, including an upcoming feature in Interior Design Magazine.
WENDY SHAPIRO is a Boston-based artist whose abstract work intersects natural and industrial imagery. Her abstract paintings combine textured planes in soft, muted colors with bold stripes of metallic and neon. The cracks and and rough surfaces represent natural imperfection, and the gold luster stands adjacent to this coast with notions of manmade construction. Concerned with the way art interacts with the environment, Shapiro works only with recycled and sustainable material. Wendy Shapiro has shown in galleries throughout New England, and been included in numerous auctions and collections, most notably the DeCordova Corporate Collections. Most recently, her work was featured at the FP3 Gallery in Boston, MA, and theMasterpiece Gallery in Boston, MA.
